The tests for the pre-
The children are not marked on technique; they are marked on expression and their ability to follow simple instruction. At this level, unless they refuse to participate at all during the test, they will pass and will be rewarded with a medal and a report from the examiner on the day and will later receive a certificate from the British Theatre Dance Association.
Please note that although these tests are encouraged, they are not compulsory and the children may progress to the next level without taking them.
BTDA Graded Examinations
Students take British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) General Graded and Vocational Graded Examinations in Classical Ballet, Tap and Modern Jazz. These qualifications are accredited by the regulatory authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland alongside mainstream education including GCSE and A Levels and are recognised by ‘The Council of Dance Education and Training’ (CDET).
The Rose Award system is for candidates up to and including 8 years, the system is designed to introduce candidates to the 3 disciplines through basic exercises incorporating fun, enjoyment and a chance for self expression. The examination itself is also an introduction as at this early stage as the teacher is allowed to go into the examination room and instruct the candidates, making their first experience as enjoyable as possible.
We offer a range of lower grade qualifications. Levels include Preparatory, Primary and in the case of Classical Ballet, Introduction to Grade 1. This suite of examinations, deals with the basic foundations of technique in each discipline. They serve as an introduction to the main examination structure for beginners, preparing them for the Graded system to come.
The General Graded Examinations are a suite of qualifications based on progressive mastery, with each Grade being progressively more difficult than the last. We offer grades 1 through to 5 in 3 disciplines including Classical Ballet, Modern/Jazz and Tap. These examinations are accredited by the Qualifications and curriculum authority and are part of the National Qualifications Framework. Grades 1, 2 and 3 are located in the Foundation level and in terms of the skills and understanding required are equivalent to GCSE grades D and below. Grades 4 and 5 are located in the Intermediate level and in terms of the skills and understanding required are equivalent to GCSE grades A* to C.
BTDA introduced its new vocational examinations in September 2003. This suite of qualifications aims to promote the progressive mastery of dance as a medium for professional development and personal fulfilment. To encourage the acquisition and development of leadership, personal, social and physical skills and abilities. To provide opportunities for active and discriminating participation both as a performer and as an audience. To encourage the acquisition of creative and critical understanding and judgement. To develop increasing awareness of the cultural, historical and aesthetic contribution of dance to communities and to learn about the origins of dance. They are available in the three main core disciplines, those being Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz and Tap. These examinations are accredited by the Qualifications and curriculum authority and are part of the National Qualifications Framework. Intermediate is located in the Intermediate level. Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 are located in the Advanced level.
